My name is Cliff Teachout and I have have been a soil tester for over 40 years and have 8 years of experience as a septic inspector for Northern Wisconsin counties.

Inspection vs. Pumping
You may ask, "why should I bother with an inspection, when I can just have my system pumped?" Although the easy answer is YOU WILL SAVE MONEY, there are some other very important reasons that having your septic tank pumped unnecessarily, will actually harm your septic system. This explanation is especially important for vacation homes, cabins, and houses with less than four occupants. When a tank is pumped, it takes away all the good bacteria. This bacteria is what actively breaks down the waste and keeps your tank functioning properly. Furthermore, septic systems can actually freeze during the winter if they are pumped and not enough sludge builds up before winter months.
Pumping and inspection have equal value for the state's three year requirement. Any tank having less than ⅓ sludge and scum does not need to be pumped. I very rarely come across a septic system that needs to be pumped. Because I don't own a pumping business, you can trust me to give you an unbiased evaluation of your septic tank.
Inspections cost between $60-$100 depending on the Northern Wisconsin county. Discounts are given for multiple inspections.
